The Ria Formosa is located in the Algarve region in the south of Portugal.
The Ria Formosa natural reserve was established in 1987 and extends for about 60 Km from Ancao area, (municipality of Loule), until the area of Manta Rota, (municipality ofila Real de Santo Antonio).
The peninsulas and sandy barrier islands that run parallel with the coast,form a natural barrier to the Atlantic Ocean and protect a vast area of marshland, canals and islets. (at low tide other habitats are uncovered). |
With such diversity, it is not surprising that the natural Estuary attracts a variety of life forms.
These Performance transforms it into a wintering area for birds from North Africa and central Europe. As the swallow, sea ducks and trumpeter, who here are the coldest months of the year.
It is also an area of refuge for rare species such as chicken sultana, the chameleon, the teal, the black-headed gull or a tern of red beak. Among the most characteristic species are the sea swallow, the grey plover, the kingfisher, contribute to the important fauna in this Park.
